Harding Upholstery was founded in 1981 in Olathe, KS.  It started with a family friend in 1980 who was needing their sofa reupholstered and knew that Mr. Harding had been trained in upholstery.  Mr. Harding was hesitant at first, but decided that he would go ahead and reupholster their sofa for them.  When he was done they were just ecstatic by the quality of work, and that their sofa could look brand new.  That’s when the snowball started.  Their friends were so impressed by the work that Mr. Harding had done that they also wanted their furniture reupholstered. At this point Mr. Harding was still doing upholstery on the side and had another full time job.  It finally got to the point that he was so busy with requests, that after just a year, he was getting more work from upholstery than he could manage with his other full time job.  It was then that he decided to make upholstery his full time occupation and specialty.   That’s when Harding Upholstery Foam & Décor was founded. 

His specialty in upholstery started many years before that at the early age of 15.  He was looking for a summer job in 1973, and his brother recommend an upholstery shop called North Kansas City Booth.  Don ended up getting that job, never thinking that it would become his specialty later on in life.  He worked there for 5 years full time, until he decided to get another upholstery job at Quality Vinyl.  He again loved the work and worked there until the company had partnership issues.  At that point he left upholstery to pursue a career in the automotive industry, until he went back to his earlier roots in upholstery. 

Since then he has never looked back and absolutely loves the art of upholstery.  By 1987 Harding Upholstery moved from the garage, to a small shop, then to a commercial building in Olathe, which is still his located to this day.  He says the most rewarding part of upholstery is getting to see the reaction on people’s faces when they see their newly reupholstered pieces for the first time.  He also says that every job brings on a new challenge and its always gratifying to see the finished work.
